In early November 2010 the Jewish Federation of New Mexico accused critics of the Israeli Occupation of Palestinian land of anti-Semitism and hatred toward Israel. I posted a response on the JFNM blog.
The campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions is not anti-Israel. It is pro-human rights. Nothing could be more harmful to Israelis and Jews than rationalizing, justifying and supporting human rights abuses perpetrated in the name of the Jewish people. Ignoring and denying Israel’s protracted campaign of ethnic cleansing of non-Jewish residents of Palestine can only perpetuate conflict. Most of my fellow Jews who defend Israel are adamant in their refusal to examine the documented history of the conflict. They are terrified of what they might find out about Israel and about themselves. Their narcissistic need to hide from reality has enabled Zionist ideology to evolve from a movement meant to protect the Jewish people to one that discriminates against non-Jewish people. Zionism has replaced T’shuvah (repentance, transformation) and Tikkun Olam (Healing the World) as the foundation of Judaism. The lives of Palestinians suffer horribly as a result; the soul of Judaism is in decay.
